'Tea, Talk & Tapas' 2017 at Wynyard Hall
Another fabulous event at Wynyard Hall in celebration of International Women's Day and all that's great about women in business in the North East. Ladies enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of networking, connecting and inspiration in the form of guest speaker Vikki Jackson-Smith, Managing Director of J & B Recycling. Vikki talked of the challenges and triumphs of starting and growing a business in a rapidly-chaning, male-dominated field and how she had taken over the family's sea coal business and transformed it through diversification into a recycling giant after spotting a gap in the market arising from the popularity of 'alcopops'. She shared stories of crucial business deals done with her son on her knee in the very early days of the company and how she frequently juggles the pressures and commitments of family life with board room decisions, proving, as most of us already know, it is possible to be female and combine a successful career/business with a good family life.
Ladies also enjoyed a range of boutique stalls, owned and run by other female businesses around the North East, stalls like Jayne's Boutique, an independent ladies clothing boutique run by Elena Degnan in Sedgfield. They also heard from Foundation grant recipients who are using the money given to them to transform their businesses.
All in all, a wonderful afternoon, and once again, we raised a fantastic amount of money to support the work of the Foundation. Around £10,000 will go into the Foundation's grant pot to be given out in grants in 2017/18.
Scenes from our 2016 sell-out event
If we were in any doubt whether our 2016 ladies lunch event at Wynyard Hall would be as successful as our inaugural event in 2015 then we needn't have worried - tickets sold out in record time! Many of our ladies commented that they thought it was 'even better than last year'. We had a record numbers of stalls, table sponsors and donations on the day, topping our 2015 £10,000 fundraising total.
Our guest speakers this year were Sharon and Julie, founders of the Bubbly Bauble Company - a fab gift to save those champagne corks that mark a special moment in your life.
Once again, all of the money raised will be given out in small grants to businesswomen in the North East, whatever stage of business they are in. If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in applying then click here
Our special thanks to sponsors Hewitts Solicitors, the Yorkshire Bank and to all of our table sponsors this year. Without your generous donations, we wouldn't be able to help so many women each year through our small grants - over 70 to date!
